Chapter 5

I curl my fingers around the balcony railing.

What is going on?

Another blue flame swirls up into the night sky, creating a burst of majestic sparks that rain down upon the courtyard. If it were not for the screams from below and the crawling sensation coursing through my body, I would think it was a beautiful display of fireworks. Unfortunately, it is not.

Vomit erupts from my stomach, but I am able to choke it back down. I cover my mouth as spasms of queasiness wash over me. I have never felt so violently ill before.

Just then, my chamber door bursts open.

“Princess–” Braeden stands there, eyes wide and mouth agape.

Another round of blue flames burst in the sky. This time, the iridescent sparks explode into a fiery gas that drifts along the gentle breeze. It searches for something, or someone. I stand, watching the gas creep closer to me. Dizzy, nauseous, and confused, I stand frozen. Paralyzed. Unable to command my body to move.

“Rhiannon!” Braeden grabs my arm and pulls me from the clutches of the gas as it overtakes my balcony. We tumble into my room, and he kicks the French doors closed.

“That should stop it,” he says. And I swear he muttered, “hopefully,” under his breath.

“What is it?” I whisper.

“Those are the signature flames of the Dark Lord–”

“But that is just a myth.”

He stands and offers me his hand. “All myths are born from truth.”

Blushing, I nod as my hands touch my bare legs.

Braeden clears his throat. “You will want to put on something you can run in.”

“Will I be running?”

“Oh, yes, little one. You will be running for your life.”

My heart swells at the sound of “little one.” It was the nickname Braeden gave me when we were younger. I always thought it was because I was smaller than him, and younger. But my mother informed me that it was a term of endearment, given to someone special as a sign of affection. At the time, hearing that made me sick, and I asked Braeden never to call me that again. But now, in this circumstance, it gives me peace. Just his presence calms my nerves.

After all this time, I remember.

He turns his back, I assume to give me privacy. I turn toward my wardrobe to find something suitable to slip over my undergarments.

My room is ablaze from the light of the blue flames, which continue to engulf the exterior of the palace. Though, this time, the flames take a different path. They ride on a never-ending wave of energy and move swiftly up the outside walls, igniting upon impact. I watch with growing angst as the flames begin to climb over and around the balcony, licking at the French doors, trying to push past the forcefield that protects us…for now.

“Hurry!” Braeden urges.

Pounding on my chamber door brings me back into focus, and I nod at Braeden.

He calls through the door, “Who is it?”

His stern tone catches me off guard.

When did he become so authoritative?

I’m looking for my leather riding pants and matching corset, but I cannot find them anywhere.
